LIU Pi-Chuan communicates her perspectives on life through her works on nature. In to Look Old and Clumsys, LIU Pi-Chuan used an ancient fig tree and its ever-changing trunks and branches as the subject of the work. In the picture, we can see a giant fig tree reaching for the sky in a display of spirited might. When viewed up close, we can see that some of the branches are soft, strong, thin, short, lanky, or stout. These different forms weave and merge into each other, underlying the tree’s innate vitality. The interwoven patterns on the trunks represent our worries which have never ceased to plague us, yet left us wiser. Just like the fig tree depicted, we are encouraged to use the lessons learned and become stronger than before.
