HSIEH Li-Chu mainly works with photographs. In the Rain captures a scene of an old city during rain with a group of tourists shuffling forth with their umbrellas opened. The artist used post-processing to blur the image. Rows of shop houses on both sides as well as the tourists themselves have been blurred, making it difficult to discern individual contours, leaving only a bouquet of colorful umbrellas advancing along the street. The brilliance of the umbrella colors have been heightened by the deliberate obscuration of the background, adding a dash of colorful decor to this ancient town. HSIEH Li-Chu’s work portrays a temporal intersection of the old and new, offering a dynamic and poetic presentation of a rainy day at a historical site.
