TSAI Shang-Shian suffers from abnormal muscular strength caused by cerebral palsy. This meant that TSAI Shang-Shian is unable to hold his camera still when taking photographs. In response, Tsai developed a unique technique of “blind photography.” In other words, TSAI Shang-Shian would simply take photographs without looking through the eyepiece, supporting the camera using his “heart” when capturing various moments and scenes. Childhood Memories and a Weird World is a work of five photographs. Although it is based upon nature, each photograph targets different subjects. Some depicts trees, while others depict quiet country roads or lakes reflecting flamboyantly colored clouds in the sky. The images may be shaky and fogged, but depict an unparalleled sense of serenity. TSAI Shang-Shian combines an IR filter with his unique blind photography technique to not only capture brief transient moments that exist in our natural world, but also to create a detailed illustration of color tones and temperature that are unique to every moment.
