CHEN Ling-Hsien is skilled in employing different media and techniques in her visual works. In Blue & Black, CHEN Ling-Hsien took photographs of branches taken at Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan and rearranged them to create a brand new photographic work. Pristine and clear blue skies gradually transform into a deep and moody blue, while the branches are turned into a dark shadow stretching from the four corners, crisscrossing with each other to form a web that covers the entire canvas. The composition of the branches and sky creates a rich and evolving spatial structure, with complicated branches depicted in full detail and simple elements that do not descend into ennui. Through basic colors and simple photography, CHEN Ling-Hsien has reconstructed his visual memory of looking up into the skies, transforming the once brilliant experience into a complex visual sensation.
