WANG Yu-Sung’s works are known for their lively nature and personality, and have always been depicted in black and white. His detailed brushworks are responsible for creating pieces with textures not unlike those of monochrome photographs. In Golden Toad in the Moon Night, Wang used simple monochromatic colors to once again create a richly layered and dynamic spatial sensation. The toads occupy two-thirds of the canvas, some staring directly at the viewers, while others sit with their backs turned. Every toad has a unique expression and pose, as though they each have a story to tell. A mountain and bay occupies the top of the painting. Far away into the horizon, we can see a partially obscured moon hanging in the sky, basking the sleeping toads to create a dream-like vision that calms and soothes the soul. In this work, WANG Yu-Sung hopes to kindle memories of beautiful landscapes almost forgotten in the corners of your mind.
