YE Yi-Jhen borrows the Chinese bird-and-flower painting genre to voice her feelings, likening the flower to a woman, expressing the changing feelings of her psychological state when she finds herself facing external circumstances. In Deep Quiet Handcuffs-Short the artist uses artistic realism to depict an elegantly colored, sharply contoured, pink flower, the petals beautifully curled in a transparent bowl full of water. This work is divided into an upper and lower part. The upper part of the canvass represents the unsettled feeling of the ego facing the external; the bottom portion points to when a woman is alone and experiences an inner calm. The artist believes that the flower seems to symbolize the spirit of perseverance when a woman is faced with external circumstances. YE Yi-Jhen communicates conflicting feelings of rationality and coldness but also romance--and also the most honest reflection of her deepest, innermost self.
