In nearly 50 years as a photographer, SU Ming-Chyuan opted to follow a path different from the then-popular profession of fashion photography. Instead, he prefers to photograph the realities of ordinary life. In Warming Water, the First Sign of Spring, he captures a scene of a sandy riverside in Taiwan. In this fertile spot, farmers till the soil, catch fish, and raise ducks. The geometric curve of the undulating sandy shore demarcates the contrast between the land and the water. A flock of ducks entering the water, like a dynamic force, completes the composition. Su’s photographic work is rich and meaningful, conveying a rural ambience and revealing the path of Taiwan’s growth. His photographs are valuable witnesses to history.
