CHEN Wan-Jen excels at recording artistic works on video. He is forever with a camera in his hands, observing and shooting the people and things around him, and with digital art postproduction techniques, he creates surreal image narratives. At first Sports Fields shows an ordinary scene of passengers waiting for a train on the platform. As the train enters the station all of a sudden on the platform there appears a crowd of little people, all out of proportion with the picture, busily scampering around. Accompanied by the loud and noisy voices of those waiting for the train, the appearance of these little people makes for a bizarre atmosphere. The artist borrows a real urban scene and makes a dynamic collage of human figures to create a kind of time and space dislocation, as if rebuilding a stage for an everyday landscape and presenting viewers with a humorous theatrical performance.
