Artist LI I-Fong’s painting Facial Tattoo, Hand Tattoo, based on traditional Chinese brush-and-ink painting, depicts the graceful bearing of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples. The subject of the painting incorporates the facial tattooing traditions of the Atayal people and the hand tattooing customs of the Paiwan tribesfolk, breaking new ground in contemporary brush-and-ink painting. The four women show similar expressions and poses, gently lifting their right hands as they face the viewer. To the Paiwan and Atayal, tattoos signify the greatest glory, and the rigid expressions of the tattooed women convey courage while also showing their determination to preserve their cultures.
