Calligrapher WANG Jen-Bang believes that to explore the forms and compositions of modern calligraphy, it’s necessary to go back to the basics of calligraphy; that is, the essential expression of lines. In this horizontal piece titled Great Aspiration, Wang chooses the intrigue of the seal script, taking advantage of the softness of a long-haired brush to write in a freehand style. He produces irregularly spaced, dense characters that starkly contrast the black and white spaces and take full advantage of the rich forms of the seal script. The words come from the verse of poet Li Bai, whose frame of mind Wang carefully studied. He then added his own mental state into the mix to highlight the form, structure and arrangement of the characters. This intriguing fusion of tradition and innovation successfully showcases Wang’s personal artistic acumen and intensifies the contemporary imagery in his calligraphy.
