Truthfulness and Hypocrisy is part of artist CHIU Yu-Sheng’s Mask series. In this piece dominated by grey tones, a standing figure in black wears a white mask. This human figure is simple in form and filled with intense symbolism. He has no obvious traits, and his personality is hard to pinpoint, like the essence of a real human being. And behind him is a portrait showing an almost identical figure. By incorporating two paintings of identical appearance, this piece produces an interesting contrastive relationship between what’s inside the frame and what’s outside. Using this symbolic human figure, Chiu tries to arouse the viewer’s subconscious, and the picture-in-a-picture form leads the viewer toward an intriguing observation of the real and unreal.
