Space Frame: Urban Tales I

Inspired by the Zuoying City God Temple in Kaohsiung, HSIA Tsu-Liang created the series Space Frame: Urban Tales based on the theme of Kaohsiung’s old city wall. In Space Frame: Urban Tales I, Hsia presents a picture of the old city wall looking up from a low angle. The periphery of the image is characterized by expressive lines and flat blocks of color that augment the sense of visual motion. The lower part of the image incorporates images of the city wall deconstructed into geometric forms and reorganized into different visual angles. Hsia’s heavy use of browns gives us a historic sense of the changing appearance of the wall. Her composition style, midway between abstract and realistic, breaks free from the traditional confines of painting and allows for innovation in presenting the subject of this historic site.
