HSIEN Fu-Yin’s painting Elevator shows a scene inside an elevator. In this painting, the mirrors in the elevator reflect an empty internal scene. A glimpse of the outside is visible through a crack in the door, reflected in the mirror. The overlapping interior and exterior scenes in the mirrors produce an intriguing contrastive spatial relationship. In the mirrors, you can indirectly observe the scenery outside of the elevator, conveying a hard-to-explain and even unwitting voyeuristic desire. Meanwhile, the flowing quality of the ink gives the painting a dreamlike quality.
