YU Wun-Di’ s work “Taiwan Fabric, Taiwan Defiant” in Chinese sounds the same as “Taiwan Fabric”, which refers to the traditional Taiwan floral fabric. Using gauche and silk as media, the artist’s style resembles the patterns on the traditional Taiwan floral fabric. Yu chooses authoritative symbols in both Eastern and Western cultures, such as Mickey Mouse that represents the Western capitalist powers, and dragon, which symbolizes the totalitarian rule of Chinese emperors. Yu hides all these symbols in the floral fabric that represents the Taiwanese culture, expressing the subject consciousness of Taiwanese people woven by diverse cultures and politics.
