In Absence, ZENG Pin-Jie tells a story of the loss of self as a result of love, and of its subsequent rebirth. In this painting, a wooden puppet, missing its left forearm and right calf, sits on a bench. A wooden stick juts out of a hole in the left side of the puppet’s chest, and at the end of the stick is a bright red heart. On the wall behind the puppet are framed photos as well as clocks showing different times, symbolizing bygone memories and passing time. Zeng sees the puppet as a metaphor for domination by love, gradual loss of self, and an inability to resist. But when your heart, which is deeply in love with your partner, becomes hollow, you finally wake up and seek a new start.
