This series by FAN Chiao-Ling looks at human existence in the world and the clashing psychological states that are involved. In Did I Hit the Nail on the Head?! there are nine little illustrations, in which the artist paints several novel species, all composites of humans, animals and alien creatures. Within each uniquely colored panel, the creatures are engaged in strange actions, such as scratching. To the artist, these creatures represent the anxiety, over-sensitivity and restless psychological states that we experience when facing interpersonal relationships and society as a whole. Since they can’t find any way to relieve their itches, they simply self-replicate like cells do. In this piece, Fan reconciles the solemnity that people face by living in society, using black humor to explain herself.
