In Mushrooms at Christmas, artist CHANG Ya-Chu anthropomorphizes mushrooms and displays them in their myriad forms. Upon closer inspection, each mushroom has a different expression: some bemused, some lifeless, some enraged; in addition to these, the image includes fish, kittens, the moon, Christmas stockings and imaginary creatures. In real life, mushrooms grow in dark, damp environments, but here the artist offers a feeling of joy using bold color combinations and vivid imagination, overturning our entrenched impressions of mushrooms and building a riotous Christmas scene.
