The human figure in LIN Chia-Hung’s work has a deliberately exaggerated head and a reduced body, as well as a pair of large black circular eyes. In Robot an expressionless face of a young girl abstractedly gazes out at the onlooker with vacant eyes. The torso is made from spare machine parts and appears against a totally black background. By means of this combined human/machine assembly the artist tells us that although the development of technology has made our lives convenient, it is difficult to break our reliance on it so that, conversely, technology controls and dominates our lives. Lin excels at dissecting contemporary social conflicts from the bystander’s point of view, and via the facial expressions and poses of her subjects she expresses her own thoughts about life today.
