YU Jhong-Yi’s photographic work The Moment of the Crash is a humorous treatment of the technological problems we often deal with in our modern, high-tech lives. Here, Yu photographs the overlapping windows that appear during a computer malfunction. Like painting with defective windows, she drags them around to create a multilayered effect, giving the scene the smudged appearance of a landscape painting. Using a crashed computer desktop, Yu creates extraordinary images that elicit a knowing smile. She makes full use of an ordinary medium from today’s society to humorously transform a state of embarrassment and dismay into a pictorial delight, creating a new kind of aesthetic joy.
