The indispensible element in CHEN Jia-Ren’s images is the people and things that are not there. For a photograph, “absence” implies missing information, and such a loss allows the poetry of the image to make its appearance. Weekend #2, a follow-up of Weekend, is a separate work of the artist. On a weekend following a snowstorm, he returns to the original spot to take a new photograph—it is the same location but now in a different season. Although the scene is full of people, after some digital post-production, the people and their interactions have been removed or changed by the artist. The picture, at first glance a lively scene, is now suddenly no longer what it once was, there are no interacting people, and a sense of loneliness quietly emerges.
