Artwork Appreciation
WU Cheng-Chang’s Seeing and Construction-Question Mark is a black and white photograph that converts external sceneries into a manifestation of inner emotions. The image shows neat rows of tables and chairs in an abandoned classroom. The viewer faces the blackboard and the speaker’s podium, with the floating and glowing question mark appearing like a form of divine guidance pointing us towards a certain direction. WU Cheng-Chang has used this photograph to create a sense of ‘true spiritual emptiness’ in the complex and physical world we live in. Symbols were employed to initiate dialogs between our visual senses, our mind, and our environment and achieve emotional release.
