Artwork Appreciation
These six paintings, “Puzzle IV – s, h, g, p, d, m”, by artist Tsai Ming-Jiun, are abstract paintings with clean, precise lines and bright colors when looked at from a near distance; but when you move away from the paintings, don’t they remind you of something familiar?
These abstract paintings are all parts of famous cartoon characters:
The ears and eyes of Snoopy, the red bow of Hello Kitty, the eyelids of Garfield, the tail of Pink Panther, the bell of Doraemon, and the ears and forehead of Mickey Mouse.
The artist explores how people recognize visual symbols through these puzzle pieces. When you recall the images of these cartoon characters and approach the paintings again, don’t you have that feeling of “it is not the same anymore”? They are no longer abstract paintings.
